Opening and closing your bracelet clasp

Your bracelet arrives done up, and the first thing most people want to do is get it open without forcing anything. It comes apart easily once you can see which clasp you have.

This is separate from sizing the bracelet, which is about taking links out to match your wrist. Do the sizing once. Opening the clasp is what you do every day.

Which clasp do I have?

Nearly all our metal bracelets use a deployant clasp: instead of a pin and holes, the bracelet stays as a loop and a hinged section folds out to let your hand through. Look at the underside of the clasp and you will see one of two things.

What you can see What you have
A small button on each side of the clasp Butterfly clasp. It opens from the middle, both sides at once.
No buttons, just a flat cover that lifts Folding clasp. It opens from one end.

Opening a butterfly clasp

  1. Press both side buttons at the same time. One on its own will not release it, which is exactly what stops it opening on your wrist.
  2. The clasp will spring open from the centre and the two halves swing outwards.
  3. Let go of the buttons and open it the rest of the way with your fingers.

If it is not moving, check you are pressing both buttons squarely rather than pinching the clasp itself. These take very little force once both are in.

Opening a folding clasp

  1. Find the edge of the top cover, the flat plate lying over the clasp.
  2. Lift that edge upwards, away from your wrist. It unclips and hinges back.
  3. With the cover up, the folded section underneath straightens out and the bracelet opens.

Lift from the edge, not the middle of the cover. Pressing the middle pushes it further closed.

Closing it again

Both types close the same way, and neither needs any force.

  1. Put the bracelet over your wrist with the clasp lying flat.
  2. Fold the sections back in so they sit on top of each other.
  3. Press the cover down until it clicks. That click is the clasp locking, so if you do not hear or feel one, it is not closed. Lift it and try again rather than pressing harder.

Give the bracelet a gentle pull once it is on. A closed clasp will not open.

A few things worth knowing

  • The clasp is the part that wears, so it is normal for a new one to feel stiff for the first week and to loosen slightly with use.
  • If the bracelet is comfortable when open but tight when closed, that is a sizing problem, not a clasp problem. Take a link out.
  • Milanese and mesh straps do not have a deployant clasp. Theirs slides along the mesh instead, and there is a short video for adjusting those.
  • Our stretch elastic bracelet has no clasp at all. It goes straight over your hand.

If the clasp will not open, stop before you lever it with anything. Message us on the chat and we will tell you which type you have and what to press.
